Sunlight Fine Rug Care provided expert full rug re-weaving for a 1930s semi-antique Persian Abadeh in a Manhattan penthouse. Our master weavers restored the rare “Zili Sultan” vase and peacock design to museum-quality condition.
Project Overview
We were commissioned by a collector in Tribeca, Manhattan, to restore a significant 1930s semi-antique Persian Abadeh rug. This specific piece featured the intricate Zili Sultan “vase and peacock” design, which had suffered structural compromise and significant foundation wear over its nearly century-long lifespan.
Restoring a rug of this caliber requires more than a simple patch; it necessitates a deep understanding of historical weaving techniques to ensure the new wool and knots integrate seamlessly with the original 1930s craftsmanship.
The Process
-
Structural Assessment & Mapping: We analyzed the knot density and warp/weft tension to match the original Abadeh construction.
-
Color Matching: Our team sourced vegetable-dyed wool to perfectly replicate the aged patina of the 1930s fibers, avoiding the “harsh” look of modern synthetic dyes.
-
Foundation Re-Building: We re-established the cotton warp and weft in the damaged areas to provide a sturdy “skeleton” for the new knots.
-
Master Re-Weaving: Using the traditional Zili Sultan pattern as a guide, our artisans hand-knotted the vase and peacock motifs, mirroring the original tension and direction.
-
Shearing & Leveling: The newly woven sections were carefully sheared to the exact height of the surrounding pile for a flush, invisible finish.
