Project Overview

A client in Park Slope, Brooklyn reached out after an accidental liquid spill caused severe dye migration on an expensive, hand-woven silk area rug. Dark red and deep blue dyes from the rug’s intricate floral patterns had bled directly onto the delicate, cream-colored silk field and cotton fringes.

Silk is one of the most delicate natural fibers and requires specialized chemical balancing. Off-the-shelf stain removers or hot water extraction will permanently set bled dyes or strip the natural sheen from pure silk. Our challenge was to reverse the dye bleed and pull the fugitive colors out of the cream silk without stripping the original underlying design.

The Process

1.Color Fastness & Fiber Stabilization: Prevention.

We performed a microscopic fiber test to identify dye composition, then applied an acidic dye lock solution across the un-bled patterned zones to lock in original colors.

2.Targeted Dye Bleed Reduction:Chemical Treatment.

Using a specialized, neutral-pH color-reducing agent formulated strictly for protein fibers (silk and wool), our master rug technician precisely targeted the migrated fugitive dyes.

3.Controlled Cold-Water Extraction: Flush.

We gently flushed out the neutralized dye particles using low-pressure, cold-water extraction to prevent fiber heat-shock and ensure the silk’s natural protein luster remained intact.

4.Cotton Fringe Whitening & Grooming:Finishing Touches.

Fugitive dye was lifted from the cotton fringes, followed by hand-grooming the silk pile in its natural direction to ensure a rich, uniform sheen upon drying.
